Okeh Records

5719 Tell Me More (And More, And Then Some)
Billie Holiday
7th, June 1940
W26901-A
Tell me more and more and then some
You know what I long to hear
I want more and more and then some
Of that I Love You Only Dear
Tell me more and more and then some
The way that you feel and then
When you’ve told that old sweet story
And you’re through, start right in again
I’ve made that old mistake
Know the awful ache
Of a heart that’s double crossed
The waitin’s been so long
It’s hard to be believing
If I’ve missed my guess, happiness is lost
Tell me more and more and then some
You know how I love that stuff
Whisper on from now ‘til Doomsday
But I never will hear enough
(bridge)
I’ve made that old mistake
Know the awful ache
Of a heart that’s double crossed
The waitin’s been so long
It’s hard to be believing
If miss my guess happiness is lost
Tell me more and more and then some

Whisper on from now ‘til Doomsday
But I never will hear enough

5806 It’s The Same Old Story
M. Field & N. Oliphant
12th, September 1940
28619-1
The same old story
It’s as old as the stars above
The same old story
Of a boy and a girl in love
The scenes say more moonlight
The times say more June night
Romance’s the thing
Two hearts away deep in a dream
The same old story
It’s been told much too much before
The same old story
But it’s worth telling just once more
It’s all fun and laughter
They lived ever after in ecstasy
The same old story but it’s new to me

5806 Practice Makes Perfect
D. Roberts & E. Gold
12th, September 1940
28620-1
If practice makes perfect
Let’s try that old embrace
In some romantic place
Where we can take our time
If practice makes perfect
Just close your eyes again
We’ll try those sights again
And make them more sublime
We’re in love’s kindergarten
Learning from A to Z
And if it’s fun just starting
Think what it’s going to be
If practice makes perfect
Let’s have that kiss again
We must’n miss again
We’re not doing bad right now

28617-1
Let our friends say what they want to say
If I’m wrong I’ll be the one to pay
No matter if it’s true
You’ll find that I’m all for you
Let the cards predict we’ll drift apart
And the stars foretell a broken heart
No matter if they do
You’ll find that I’m all for you
I only know come what may
You’ll always find me by your side
I may be a fool
Time alone will decide
Let them all say that it’s just a game
And I’m sure to lose
But just the same no matter if I do
You’ll find that I’m all for you

Lyrics : Frank Loesser
Music : Burton Lane
12th, September 1940

I hear music
Mighty fine music
The murmur of a morning breeze up there
The rattle of the milkman on the stair
Sure that’s music
Mighty fine music
The singing of a sparrow in the sky
The perking of the coffee right nearby
That’s my favorite melody
You my angel phoning me
I hear music
Mighty fine music
And anytime I think my world is wrong
I get me out of bed and sing this song
(bridge)

W26900-A
I’m pulling through and it’s because of you
When I was stranded came your helping hand
Lonely hurt I had not known which way to turn
‘Til you said That’s bad, not tears, just laugh and learn
I’m pulling through and it’s because of you
You made me see how lovely life could be
Lifted up my heart and made me count the cost
To find I’d gained not lost
When I thought that hope was really gone
You showed me I was wrong
And you taught me how to carry on
Thanks for the lift in time and thanks for this song
I’m pulling through and it’s because of you
I’d do the same for you if your turn came
Hope it never will for I’ve been through the mill
I won’t forget this debt
I’m pulling through

Nothing but love in view
Then if you fall once and for all

One love affair for two
And so with time on my hands
And you in my arms
And love in my heart all for you

W.C. Handy
15th, October 1940
28875-1
Love is like a hydrant turns off and on
Like some friendships when your money’s gone
Love stands in with the loan sharks when your heart’s in tongs
If I had some strong wings like an aeroplane
Had some broad wings like an aeroplane
I would fly away forever
Never to come again
Oh love oh love oh loveless love
Has said our hearts are goldless gold
From milkless milk and silkless silk
We are growing used to soul-less souls
Such grafting times we never saw
That’s why we have a pure full law
In everything we find a flaw
Even love oh love oh loveless love
(bridge)
Just to fly away from loveless love

Georgia
The whole day through
Just an old sweet song

A song of you
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
Georgia

No peace I find
Just and old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Romance in the dark with you
All at once I knew
Darling love was near
I thrill to my finger tips

But only my heart obeyed
A flame grew from just a spark
When I found romance in the dark with you

All of me
Why not take all of me
Can’t you see
I’m no good without you
Take my lips
I want to loose them
Take my arms
I’ll never use them
Your good-bye
Left me with eyes that cry
How can I
Go on dear without you
You took the part
That once was my heart
So why not take
All of me?

Lyrics & Music : Billie Holiday & Arthur Herzog Jr.
9th, May 1941
30458-1
Them that’s got shall get
Them that’s not shall lose
So the Bible said and it still is news
Mama may have Papa may have
But God bless the child that’s got his own
That’s got his own
Yes the strong gets more
While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets don’t ever make the grade
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that’s got his own
That’s got his own
Money you’ve got lots of friends
Crowding round the door
When you’re gone and spending ends
They don’t come no more
Rich relations give crust of bread and such
You can help yourself but don’t take too much
Mama may have Papa may have
But God bless the child that’s got his own
That’s got his own
(short bridge)
Mama may have Papa may have
But God bless the child that’s got his own
That’s got his own
He just don’t worry ‘bout nothing
‘Cause he’s got his own

With memories that never die

With gloom everywhere
I sit and I stare
I know that I’ll soon go mad
In my solitude I’m praying
Dear Lord above
Send back my love

Jim doesn’t ever bring me pretty flowers
Jim never tries to cheer my lonely hours
Don’t know why I’m so crazy for Jim
Jim never tells me I’m his heart’s desire
I never seem to set his love afire
Gone are the years I’ve wasted on him
Sometimes when I get feeling low
I say let’s call it quits
Then I hang on and let him go
Breaking my heart in bits
Someday I know that Jim will up and leave me
But even if he does you can believe me
I’ll go on carrying the torch for Jim

6369 Love Me Or Leave Me
Lyrics : Gus Kahn
Music : Walter Donaldson
7th, August 1941
31004-1
This suspense is killing me
I can’t stand uncertainty
Tell me now I’ve got to know
Whether you want me to stay or go
Love me or leave me
Or let me be lonely
You won’t believe me
I love you only
I’d rather be lonely
Then happy with somebody else
You might find the nighttime
The right time for kissing
But nighttime is my time
For just reminiscing
Regretting
Instead of forgetting with somebody else
There’ll be no one
Unless that someone is you
I intend to be independently blue
I want your love
But I don’t want to borrow
To have it today
To give back tomorrow
For your love is my love
There’s no love for nobody else
(bridge)
There’ll be no one
Unless that someone is you

6451 Gloomy Sunday
Lyrics : Laszlo Javor & Sam M. Lewis
Music : Rezso Seress
7th, August 1941
31005-1
Sunday is gloomy my hours are slumberless
Dearest the shadows I live with are numberless
Little white flowers will never awaken you
Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thought of ever returning you
Would they be angry if I thought of joining you?
Gloomy Sunday
Gloomy is Sunday with shadows I spend it all
My heart and I have decided to end it all
Soon there’ll be candles and prayers that are sad I know
But let them not weep let them know that I’m glad to go
Death is no dream for in death I’m caressing you
With the last breath of my soul I’ll be blessing you
Gloomy Sunday
Dreaming, I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you asleep in the deep of my heart dear
Darling I hope that my dream never haunted you
My heart is telling you how much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday
- ハンガリーの作曲家 Rezso Seress が 1933年に作った曲で厭世的自殺ソングとして流行。1936年にはダミアが仏語版を発表。数種の英訳があったが、Billie が唄ったのは Sam M. Lewis 版で、「My heart and I have decided to end it all 」(恋人と私はすっかりお終いにすることにきめたの)という歌詞で全米、特に若年層に影響を与えた。ラジオ局もこの曲を放送することを躊躇った。皮肉なことに1968年に作曲者の Rezso Seress も飛び降り自殺を遂げている。
