Brunswick Records
1924年頃までは機械吹き込み時代が続くが1925年7月から電気吹き込みとなり、Red Nichols (May 8, 1905 – June 28, 1965) の The Five Pennies, や King Oliver (May 11, 1885 – April 10, 1938) のバンドなどを録音している。

7498 What A Little Moonlight Can Do
Lyrics and music by Harry Woods
2nd, July 1935
B17767-1
Ooh, ooh, ooh
What a little moonlight can do
Ooh, ooh, ooh
What a little moonlight can do to you
You’re in love
Your heart’s fluttering all day long
You only stutter cause your poor tongue
Just will not utter the words
I love you
Ooh, ooh, ooh
What a little moonlight can do
Wait a while
Till a little moonbeam comes peepin’ through
He’ll get bold
You can’t resist him
All you’ll say
When you have kissed him is
Ooh, ooh, ooh
What a little moonlight can do
- Harry Woods (1896-1970) 「Side By Side」や「Try a Little Tenderness」の作曲者として有名。
Billie Holiday
以後、Billie がクラブ出演の際は「I Cried For You」と共に必ず唄った。

7498 A Sunbonnet Blue
Irving Kahal & Sammy Fain
2nd, July 1935
B17769-1
A sunbonnet blue and a yellow straw hat
Shy little he and she
Were declaring love’s old story
In the shade of the old apple tree
A sunbonnet blue and a yellow straw hat
Decided to say, "I do"
So they rode to June and glory
On a bicycle built for two
Hear the past. The song is old.
The summer days are through
With silver threads among the gold
They still say, "I love you"
A sunbonnet blue and a yellow straw hat
Are true to this very day
For he loves her in December
As he did in May

7501 I Wished On The Moon
Lyrics : Dorothy Parker
Music : Ralph Rainger
2nd, July 1935
B17766-1
I wished on the moon
For something I never knew
Wished on the moon
For more than I ever knew
A sweeter rose, a softer sky
On April days that would not dance away
I begged on the stars
To throw me a beam or two
Wished on the stars
And asked for a dream or two
I looked for every loveliness
It all came true
I wished on the moon for you

7501 Miss Brown To You
Leo Robin & Richard Whiting & Ralph Rainger
2nd, July 1935
B17768-1
Who do you think is comin’ to town
You’ll never guess who
Lovable huggable Emily Brown
Miss Brown to you
What if the rain comes pattering down
My heaven is blue
Can it be sending me Emily Brown
Miss Brown to you
I know her eyes will thrill you
But go slow oh, oh
Don’t you all get too familiar
Why do you think she’s comin’ to town
Just wait and you’ll see
The lovable little Miss Brown to you
Is baby to me
(bridge)
Yes, yes
Mark it down
- Billie

What a night
What a moon
What a boy
What a moon
What a night
What a boy
Those white clouds hang in the air
Like toy balloons
Say they just hang in the air
That’s made for honeymoons
What a hug
What a kiss
What a boy
What a game Oh, what bliss
What a boy
Is it a wonder
My heart is full of joy
What a night
What a moon
What a boy

Walter Samuels & Leonard Whitcup & Teddy Powell
31st, July 1935
B17915-1
It’s too hot for words
Why bother with conversation
Don’t let’s talk or even walk
If you want to make love okay
It’s too hot for words
There’s nothing like relaxation
Can’t ignore this temperature
But if you want to make love okay
Let’s find a cozy nook
Beside a babbling brook
Let’s find a shady tree
Let the love birds talk for you and me
‘Cause it’s much too hot for words
Why bother with conversation
Goodness knows my heart disclose
All it dares to say
All it cares to say
It’s too hot for words

7520 I’m Painting The Town Red
Charles Tobias & Charles Newman & Sam H. Stept
31st, July 1935
B17914-1
A smile on my face
A song on my lips
Pretending is all I do
I’m painting the town red
To hide a heart that’s blue
I’m gay with the crowd
I play with the crowd
But oh, if they only knew
I’m painting the town red
To hide a heart that’s blue
Must I go on carrin’ on
My merry song is just pretend
Loving you so, wanting you so
Where will it end, how will it end
A smile on my face
A song on my lips
But never forgetting you
I’m painting the town red
To hide a heart that’s blue

7550 Twenty-Four Hours A Day
Lyrics : Arthur Swanstrom
Music : James Frederick Hanley
28th, October 1935
B18196-1
Like a little old fashioned music box
With just one tune to play
My heart keeps singin’ I love you
Twenty four hours a day
Like a little old fashioned music box
That skips a note or two
My heart keeps missin’ a heart beat
Singin’ its song about you
And although the song we know is old
It’s still the sweetest story ever told
Like a little old fashioned music box
With just one tune to play
My heart keeps singin’ I love you
Twenty four hours a day

7550 Yankee Doodle Never Went To Town
Arthur Freed & Bernie Hanighan
28th, October 1935
B18197-1
Yankee Doodle never went to town
I just discovered the story was phony
Let me give you all the real low-down
He didn’t even own a pony
He was really very short and fat
While in the story so skinny and moany
And so hungry that he ate his hat
And called the felt macaroni
Underneath the chestnut tree
He and the blacksmith would sip that tea
Then he’d bring out his uniform down
That’s how he went to town
Yankee Doodle tried to leave one day
Took his belongings and mounted his saddle
But he never got it on his way
Cause he didn’t have a pony
And the fairy tale is phony
How could Yankee Doodle go to town?

If you were mine
I could be a ruler of kings
And if you were mine
I could do such wonderful things
I’d say to a star
Stop where you are
Light up my lover’s way
And every star above you
Would obey, say
If you were mine
I would live for your love alone
To kneel at your shrine
I would give up all that I own
Yes even my heart
Even my life
I’d trade it all for you
And think I was lucky too
If you were mine

Milton Pascal & Edgar Fairchild
3rd, December 1935
B18316-1
These are nights below
And that’s the moon above
And those are eyes that say you’re mine
Why can’t we combine these ‘n’ that ‘n’ those
These are moments rare
And that’s the comfy chair
And those are lips that should be kissed
How can we resist these ‘n’ that ‘n’ those
Holding conversation is no recreation
And we have so much more to do
I’d be disrespectful
If I were neglectful
Of all that nature gave to you
These two hearts are bold
And that’s a hand to hold
And those two arms have room to spare
Where we both can share these ‘n’ that ‘n’ those

7581 You Let Me Down
Lyrics : Al Dubin
Music : Harry Warren
3rd, December 1935
B18318-1
You told me that I was like an angel
Told me I was fit to wear a crown
So that you could get a thrill
You put me on a pedestal
And then you let me down, let me down
You told me that I’d be wearing diamonds
I would have the smartest car in town
Made me think that I’m the top
And then you let the ladder drop
You know you let me down, let me down
I walked upon a rainbow
I clung unto a star
You had me up in heaven
That’s why I had to fall so far
I was even looking for a cottage
I was measured for a wedding gown
That’s how I got cynical
You put me on a pinnacle
And then you let me down, let me down
How you let me down

Music everywhere, feet are pattin’
Puttin’ tempo in old Manhattan
Everybody is out high hattin’
Spreadin’ rhythm around
Everywhere you go trumpets are blarin’
Drums and saxophones rip and tearin’
Everybody you meet is rarin’
Spreadin’ rhythm around
Up in Harlem in every flat they give it that zing
Which according to one and all is what they call swing
Those who can’t afford silk and satin
Dance with Gigolos who are Latin
Come from Yonkers, the Bronx and Staten
Spreadin’ rhythm around

Lyrics : Eric Maschwitz
Music : Jack Strachey & Harry Link & Holt Marvell
30th, June 1936
B19496-2
A cigarette that bears a lipstick’s traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
Still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words
That told you what my heart meant
A fairground’s painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you.
You came you saw
You conquered me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow this had to be
The winds of March
That make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings
But who’s to answer
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things remind me of you

So easy to idolize
All others above
So worth the yearning for
So swell to keep every homefire burning for
We’d be so grand at the game
So carefree together
That it does seem a shame
That you can’t see
Your future with me
‘Cause you’d be oh so easy to love
You’d be so easy to love

Someday, when I’m awfully low
When the world is cold
I will feel a glow
Just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight
Oh but you’re lovely
With your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft
There is nothing for me
But to love you
Just the way you look tonight
With each word
Your tenderness grows
Tearing my fear apart
And that laugh
That wrinkles your nose
Touches my foolish heart
Lovely, never never change
Keep that breathless charm
Won’t you please arrange it
‘Cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight

And tell me who thinks of you

Oh who just longs for your caresses

Pennies from heaven

Pennies from heaven
You’ll find your fortune
Falling all over town
Be sure that your umbrella

Trade them for a package of
Sunshine and flowers
If you want the things you love
You must have showers
So when you hear it thunder
Don’t run under a tree
There’ll be pennies from heaven
For you and me

Your love could open
Heaven’s door to me
But you don’t care a straw for me
That’s life I guess
My days and nights
Are starting off with you
My sugar kisses taste like salt to you
But why should I find fault with you
That’s life I guess
The world was bright when you loved me
Sweet was the touch of your lips
The world went dark when you left me
And then there came a total eclipse
Nobody knows how cruel fate can be
How close together love and hate can be
Goodbye just clean the slate for me

‘Cause he ain’t got rhythm
Every night he sits there are wears a frown
He attracted some attention
When he found the fourth dimension
But he ain’t got rhythm
So no one’s with him
The loneliest man in town
Oh! lonely man is he
Bending over his books
His wife and family
Keep giving him dirty looks
‘Cause he ain’t got rhythm
When they call him up
It’s to call him down
With that daring aviator
He encircled the equator
But he ain’t got rhythm

You showed me the way

The shadows around me
Just disappeared from view

Not that I considered it a sin
But tonight I want your arms around me
It’s the mood that I’m in
Can it be the music that they’re playin’
Or the magic of the violin
That intrigues my heart to obeyin’
It’s the mood that I’m in
Maybe it’s the cocktail that I’m sippin’
That helps to put me in this frame of mine
Maybe it’s because of you I’m sleepin’
Tonight I’m so romantically inclined
So speak to me of love in words so tender

He treats me awfully
Each time that we meet
It’s just unlawful
How that boy can cheat
But I must have that man
He’s hot as Hades
A lady’s not safe in his arms
When she’s kissed
But I’m afraid that he’s cooled off
And maybe I’m ruled off his list
I’ll never be missed
I need that person much worse’n just bad
I’m half alive and he’s drivin’ me mad
He’s only human if he’s to be had
I must have that man

Singing the blues and sighing
You treat me coldly each day in the year

Whenever somebody is near, dear
It must be great fun to be mean to me
You shouldn’t for can’t you see
What you mean to me?

(Verse 2)
Sometimes I say
If I just could get away
With my man
He’d go straight sure as fate
For it never is too late
For a man.
I just like to dream
Of a cottage by a stream
With my man
Where a few flowers grew
And perhaps a kid or two
Like my man.
And then my eyes get wet
I ‘most forget
‘Til he gets hot
And tells me not to talk
such rot
(refrain)
Oh my man I love him so
He’ll never know
All my life is just despair
But I don’t care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright
All right
What’s the difference if I say
I’ll go away
When I know I’ll come back
On my knees someday
For whatever my man is
I’m his
Forever more

Things are looking up
I’ve been looking the landscape over
And it’s covered with four leaf clover
Oh things are looking up
Since love looked up at me
Bitter was my cup
But no more will I be the mourner
For I’ve certainly turned the corner
Oh things are looking up
Since love looked up at me
See the sunbeams
Every one beams
Just because of you
Love’s in session
And my depression
Is unmistakably through
Things are looking up
It’s a great little world we live in
Oh, I’m happy as a pup

8053 My First Impression Of You
Charles Tobias & Sam H. Stept
6th, January 1938
B22192-4
My first impression of you
Was like the sight of flowers in spring
You were a glorious thing
To see
My first impression of you
Was something indescribably new
I stood there looking at you
Smiling at me
If you had stepped right out of heaven
It wouldn’t surprise me more
I thought you were an angel
From heaven’s door
It may sound silly but true
My heart just stopped
When I caught your eye
So overwhelming
Was my first impression of you

When you’re smiling
When you’re smiling
The whole world smiles with you
When you’re laughing
When you’re laughing
The sun comes shining thru
But when you’re crying
You bring on the rain
So stop your sighing be happy again
Keep on smiling
‘Cause when you’re smiling
The whole world smiles with you

Lyrics : Clarence Gaskill
Music : Jimmy McHugh
6th, January 1938
B22195-4
Your eyes of blue your kisses too
I never knew what they could do
I can’t believe you’re in love with me
You’re telling everyone I know
I’m on your mind each place you go
They can’t believe you’re in love with me
I have always placed you far above me
I just can’t image that you love me
And after all is said and done
It looks like I’m the lucky one
I can’t believe you’re in love with me

Everybody’s laughing
Yes everybody’s laughing
They know that you and I are through
And everybody’s laughing
I told the world you loved me
And bragged about it proudly
But since they know it’s over
They’re laughing at me loudly
People love to linger
So they can point a finger
And tear apart a gal whose heart
Was taken through the wringer
If we could start all over
The laugh might be on them
But meanwhile
Everybody’s laughing
(bridge)
It we could start all over
The laugh might be on them
But meanwhile
Everybody’s laughing

See the house lights start to blink
And the sky is turnin’ pink
Gosh what will the neighbors think
Cause here it is tomorrow again
We could share a perfect day
But we’ve danced the night away
Guess you’d better hit the hay
‘cause here it is tomorrow again
We saw the sunset in the sky
Soon we’ll see the dawn
Mother Nature’s about to rise
And Father Time is marchin’ on
Dit you hear my daddy yell?
We’ve been leaning on the bell
Kiss me quick and run like sixty
‘cause here it is tomorrow again

9th, November 1938

There’s snow
flakes in the sky
And geese are flying high
But it’s April in my heart again
The devil got his due
Love’s holiday is through
Love and I have made a happy start again
Though leaves lie on the ground
The world just turned around
It isn’t Fall at all you see
It’s Spring that I have found
There’s frost in Central Park
At five it’s almost dark
What’s the difference
When you’ve heard love’s sweet amend
There’s snow
flakes in the sky
And geese are flying high
But there’s April in my heart again

And when shadows trail you
I’ll bring you the sun

8270 Say It With A Kiss
lyrics by Johnny Mercer
music by Harry Warren
9th, November 1938
B23687-1
Let me hear you say it
Say it with a kiss
If you mean that look I’ve seen
Say it with a kiss
There is wine and candle shine
And music in your lips
Music in the tops
Of your fingertips
Words may not convey it
Say it with a kiss
And your look might speak a book
That my eyes might miss
You don’t have to know the words
To love’s familiar tune
Say it with a kiss
And say it soon

They say you have no lips
For a fool such as I
They say you just believe
In hello and goodbye
And they say that the one I admire
Isn’t even remotely concerned
And that I’ll go on playing with fire
Until I have learned
My heart has been burned
They say I shouldn’t dream
Of your face in the moon
They say all of my dreams will be
Nightmares too soon
Let them talk
Let them think what they want to
If it makes them feel happy that way
I know I’ll always love you
No matter what they say

Oh what a pest I’m gonna be

You’re gonna see a lot of me
I’ll be the spoon in your coffee
The knife that butters your bread
If I sound a little bit off it
That’s because, because, because
you’ve gone to my head
If you’re in China, I’ll go to China
I’ll never, never let you free
Both day and night and night and day
You’re gonna see a lot of me

That firm resolve I made
Has vanished away now
I’m happy to say now
You win
You’re so adorable
The moment I saw you
It’s just deplorable
The fool that I’ve been
And yet I’m glad
You got my heart dear
Like a butterfly on a pin
You’re so desirable
I had to give in

Let’s dream in the moonlight
Tell me that you love me
Tell the stars above me
What’s in you heart
Let’s dream in the moonlight
Say you’re glad you found me
Put your arms around me
Before we part
Even though it’s just pretending
And the night will soon be through
I can say I’m only lending
When I give my heart to you
Let’s dream in the moonlight
Let’s your lips touch mine
Though we’re only dreaming
Tonight

What shall I say
When our neighbors want us to come to tea?
They don’t know you’re not with me
What shall I say?
What shall I say
When the phone rings and someone asks for you
They don’t know I ask for you too
What shall I say?
How can I hide the tears inside
How can I face the crowd?
I can make lips of mine be still
But my heart sighs too loud
I could explain that
You’re gone for only a week to shop
But after the week is up
What shall I say?

8314 It’s Easy To Blame The Weather
Lyrics and music by Sammy Cahn & Saul Chaplin
30th, January 1939
B24045-1
Honestly I’m glad it’s snowing
It helps to keep our friends from knowing
When they ask me why I’m sad
It’s easy to blame the weather
It’s funny how the blinding snow flakes
Are right in time to hide my heartaches
Let them ask me why I’m sad
It’s easy to blame the weather
When I think of the sun
It scares me
My alibi will pass
And springtime I hear
Is early this year
They’ll see through me like glass
I see no reason for this breakup
So let me be the first to make up
If a reason must be had
It’s easy to blame the weather

More than you know
More than you know
Man of my heart I love you so
Lately
I find you on my mind
More than you know
Whether you’re right
Whether you’re wrong
Man of my heart I’ll string along
I need you so
More than you’ll ever know
Loving you the way that I do
There’s nothing I can do about it
Loving may be all you can give
But honey I can’t live without it
Oh, how I’d sigh
How I’d cry
If you got tired and said good-bye
More than I’d show
More than you’ll ever know

Sugar
I call my baby my sugar
I never maybe my sugar
That sugar baby of mine
He’s special ration
Funny he never asks for my money
All I give him is honey
And that he can spend anytime
I’d make a million trips to his lips
If I were a bee
Because he’s sweeter than chocolate candy to me
He’s confectionary
Sugar I never cheat on my Sugar
‘Cause I’m too sweet on my Sugar
That sugar baby of mine
